Shoulder Injuries & Pain Treatment

Physical Therapist in Fishers, IN

Shoulder disorders are common musculoskeletal problems causing pain and functional loss. Your shoulders are the most movable joints in your body because your shoulder can be unstable, and it can be easily injured. Repeated stress from the way you use your shoulders on the job or play sports can lead to tears and other injuries. Common injuries to the shoulder are:
Rotator cuff tears have two main causes: injury and degeneration. Acute tear are usually due to injury. Degenerative tears are more common and are the result of wearing down of the tendon that occurs slowly over time.
Tendinitis occurs when the shoulder joint is excessively overused typically due to demands of a laborious job, overhead activity, or sport. This causes the tendon to undergo inflammation resulting in swelling and painful impingement when raising your arms.
Glenohumeral dislocations typically involve soft tissue injury, such as rotator cuff tear or a tear of the glenohumeral ligament.
There are two main forms of arthritis. Osteoarthritis occurs when cartilage in the shoulder joint typically due to age or excessive use. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system decides to attack the membranes surrounding the shoulder joint , resulting in pain and inflammation.
Impingement typically involves degeneration and or mechanical compression of subacromial structures on the anterior undersurface of the acromion, coracoacromial ligament and the acromioclavicular joint. It can also occurs because of abnormal tracking of the humeral head as you loft your arm at or above 90 degrees.

Frozen shoulder describes the most common condition characterized by painful and limited active and passive range of motion with tightening of the shoulder joint that severely limits movement.

According to the American Physical Therapy Association, a recent study from Finland asserts that when it comes to the treatment of non-traumatic rotator cuff tears, physical therapy alone produces results equal to those produced by arthroscopic surgery and open surgical repair. In this same study, a follow up on 167 patients receiving physical therapy alone for their rotator cuff injuries, demonstrated that conservative treatment such as physical therapy, should be considered primary treatment for this condition.
